Ricardo's recipe for 6 loaves of bread requires
2
7
cup of olive oil. He only wants to make 1 loaf. Ricardo makes a model to find out how much oil he needs to use. He folds a piece of paper vertically into six parts and shades two parts. Then he folds the paper horizontally into six parts and shades
1
6
of the shaded part. Ricardo decides he needs
1
4
cup of olive oil.
Is he right? Complete the explanation. Give your answer as a simplified fraction.
He used the number of parts he shaded, 12, as the denominator. He should have used the total number of parts, 42. Ricardo needs
??
42
, or cup of olive oil.

Here is their argument. given the obtuse angle x, we make a quadrilateral abcd with ∠dab = x, and ∠abc = 90◦, and ad = bc. say the perpendicular bisector to dc meets the perpendicular bisector to ab at p. then pa = pb and pc = pd. so the triangles pad and pbc have equal sides and are congruent. thus ∠pad = ∠pbc. but pab is isosceles, hence ∠pab = ∠pba. subtracting, gives x = ∠pad−∠pab = ∠pbc −∠pba = 90◦. this is a preposterous conclusion – just where is the mistake in the "proof" and why does the argument break down there?
