Jared is 10 years old and peter is 15 years old. together they run 150 yards. how far does each brother run?

I thought this was a system of equations problem but it turns out to be not because we already know their age and the only thing we need to solve for is x. 

So set let x be the unknown distance each run and set your equation as below: 

10x + 15x = 150 

x = 6; 

Jared = 10(6) = 60 

Peter = 15(6) = 90
