Here's the work for converting the general form of the equation of a circle to standard form: x² + y² - x - 2y - 11/4 = 0 >
x² - x + 1/4 + y² - 2y = 11/4 +1/4 >
(x - 1/2)² + y² - 2y + 1 = 12/4 + 1 >
(x - 1/2)² + (y - 1)² = 4
My question is this: How do you get 1/4 on the left side of the equation? Thanks!
