Look at a unit circle reference sheet. Notice how one of the points is  which occurs at 60 degrees. 

Alternatively, you can look at a 30-60-90 triangle and notice that the short leg is 1, the longer leg is sqrt(3), and the hypotenuse is 2. The 60 degree angle is opposite the longer leg. 

Computing cos(60) leads to adjacent/hypotenuse = 1/2
