The expression 5x was arrived at by multiplying 5 times x. To reverse that multiplication, you would divide 5x by 5 and get x. However, since this is an equation, you would need to divide both sides of the equation by 5, or else it wouldn't still be equal. The result of dividing both sides is x=5.
As you can see, by taking the inverse operation, you were able to isolate your variable (x) on one side of the equation and therefore solve for its value.
