The new area of the similar figure would actually be 256 square centimeters. Want to know why it would by 256 and not 128 like you think and like the other answer says? That is because they are not saying the area is being doubled they are saying that the SIDES are being doubled. Therefore if the area was 64 then one side was 8. If you double 8 it is 16. Then the area of the new figure would be 16*16 or 16 squared which equals to 256 centimeters squared.
