The distributive property basically states that a number outside the brackets has to be distributed to each term in the expression. 

ig. a(b+c) 
= ab + ac 

Keeping this in mind, we can do the same thing with this expression by simplifying it. To do that, we take out a common number that each term can be divided by (the largest possible) 

In this case that's 12. 

so, factor out the 12 (meaning you divide each term by 12) 

that gives us 
12(1+2x) 

Think of it as five or above give it a shove. change the 5 or above to the right to a zero and add one to the number on the left.
