A factory was recently built near a forested area where a population of beetles lives. There are three color phenotypes within the beetle population: white, light gray, and dark gray. The beetles are preyed upon by birds that also live in the forest. The beetles live mainly within a stand of Aspen trees, which have white bark, and evade predators through the use of camouflage. That is, the white and light gray beetles blend in well with the light-colored tree trunks. Scientists are studying how pollution from the new factory may disrupt the forest ecosystem. They are particularly interested in the beetle population because the pollution from the factory is expected to darken the color of the tree trunks over time. As part of their study, they are monitoring the beetle population. They have marked off a 100 square foot area within the forest and have counted the number of beetles of each color found within the area at four separate days during the first year after the opening of the factory. The data are in the table below.
