SPSS/APA HOMEWORK FACTORIAL ANOVA
The practice problems in the module didn't have you calculate all from raw data (such as SS) and you will need to know how to do this. So, for our most complex ANOVA design, the factorial, this will give you some practice.
YOU CAN TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR HOMEWORK AND SEND IT TO ME. PLEASE WRITE RESULTS IN APA FORMULA AND A FEW SENTENCES REGARDING WHAT THE RESULTS MEAN IN RELATION TO DIAGNOSIS AND EXERCISE. ALSO MAKE A GRAPH - USING FACTOR B IN YOUR KEY. ALPHA = .05
Remember Tukey's is essential in discussing what the results mean because it tells you where significance is in the means (either cell if interaction is significant or marginals if a factor or both factors are significant) BUT, LIKE THE CRITICAL F OR Fs, IT IS NOT PUT IN THE APA FORMAT.
Two factors will be used, A has 3 levels and B has 2 levels. Thus we have a 3x2 design.
Factor A is Type of Diagnosis
a1 = depression
a2 = anxiety
a3 = impulse control
Factor B is Exercise
b1 = less than 2 hours weekly
b2 = between 2 and 4 hours weekly
Unfortunately I can't put b1 and b2 on the right side of the matrix, so I'm labeling cells in red.
The dependent variable is how many times they experienced symptoms associated with their disorder.
These are self-report measures which participants have been keeping in a daily journal throughout the course of 2 months. The sample consisted of females who have received a diagnosis within the last 3 months, are from 16-36 years of age and are not taking any medication nor currently in therapy.
Analyze using alpha .05 - but know how to use alpha 01 too as will be needed for future testing (using appendixes).
A GRAPH MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH HOMEWORK - WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS INTERACTION.
INTERPRETING RESULTS IS THE TOUGH PART, SO REALLY LOOK AT YOUR CELLS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON.
Don't forget M and SD for each group as well as correct APA format in write up.
Calculate eta-squared, which is included in APA format AND Tukey's HSD (keep in mind you'll be looking at cells if there is significant interaction; if there is statistical significance but NO interaction you will looking at main effects of factor A or B or both A and B). Interpretations should be unbiased, succinct and ACCURATE!
Please note, the less symptoms means the better someone felt.
