The larger the standard deviation, the more spread out the data values will be. A smaller standard deviation, and the values are more closely grouped together. The variance is equal to the standard deviation squared. In terms of symbols

where V = variance and s = standard deviation
So the variance can also be used to determine how grouped or spread out the data values are



The z score tells us where this score is located in terms of the group. If the z score is positive, then it is above the mean. If the z score is negative, then it is below the mean. The further the z score is from zero, the further the raw score is from the mean. A score of z = 0 is right at the mean.
