Case presentation: jessica, age 31, suffered a left middle cerebral artery infarct four days after giving birth to her first child. this infarct led to significant damage to portions of her interior brain and compression of the left lateral ventricle. four months after her stroke, she was evaluated for neurological impairment. jessica was alert and aware of her surroundings, but immediate memory was significantly impaired, and her spoken responses were limited to "yes" or "no". jessica’s letter reading ability was incredibly impaired (she could only correctly read 1 of 26 letters in the english alphabet) and she could not give an example sound produced by any letter. when given words to read, she correctly read 5 of 22. most of her errors were either non-response or incorrect response (when presented with the word "car", jessica said "boat"). also, jessica could not successfully repeat a word after it had been spoken to her (when presented with the word "potato", jessica responded "tato").
