Due to the inclination/tilting of the earth on its own axis, the relative position of the sun with regards to the earth is different. While moving towards the pole, the length of days and night differ while at the equator, they are more or less the same. During winter at the pole, nights are longer than days and during the summer, days are longer than nights.  These fluctuations are slight at the equator.
