Acompound lens consists of 2 thin lenses l1 (f= 10cm) and l2 (f- 33 cm), separated by a distance of 34cm (a) calculate the effective focal length of this combined lens using the two lens formula. describe the image created by a 1.5 cm tall object located 7 cm from the first lens. (5 marks) (b) construct a ray diagram (graphic solution) to scale for this system. calculate the location of the intermediate image and see that it checks with the drawings. note vertical scale can be different from the horizontal (4 marks) (c) now solve the problem using matrix methods. calculate the effective focal length, the focal point and the principal points of the combined lens, and the system matrix for the combined lens and for light coming from the object. then repeat (a) using these matrices to find the image location and size.

Water is siphoned from a large tank and discharges into the atmosphere through a 50-mm diameter tube. the end of the tube is b = 2.1 m below the tank bottom which is a = 7.4 m deep, and viscous effects are negligible. determine the maximum height h over which the water can be siphoned without cavitation occurring. atmospheric pressure is 101.4 kpa, and the water vapor pressure is 1.79 kpa (absolute)
