You see lightning before you hear thunder because

When a lightning bolt goes from the cloud to the ground it opens up a hole in the air, sometimes called the channel. Once then light has left the air collapses back in and creates a wave of sound that we usally hear as thunder. We see lightning before we hear thunder is because light travels faster than sound!
