Birds have evolved to the ability to control their motions through the air by controlling the forces exerted on their bodies by the air; the contact forces on a bird by the air plus the force of gravity on the bird by the earth determine the change in motion of the bird at any instant of time. in this problem, you will be asked to use what you know about acceleration to track the motion of a diving hawk.

a hawk is flying horizontally southward at an altitude of 168.0m and at a speed of 1.70m/s when he spots a slow-flying finch ahead of his current location and below his current path. at time zero, the hawk starts a dive by controlling the contact forces on him by the air so as to produce an acceleration of 3.80m/s2 in a direction 80.0degrees below horizontally southward for a time of 1.050 seconds. with parts e, f, and g .

part a) what is the hawk's final velocity at the end of the 1.050-s interval?

magnitude 4.6 m/s direction 8.7 degrees below south

part b) what is the hawk's displacement during the 1.050-s interval?

magnitude 2.98 m direction 43.8 degrees below south

starting at the end of the 1.050-s interval, the hawk dives at constant velocity for 5.5 s.

part c) what is the hawk's displacement during the 5.5-s interval?

magnitude 25.3 m direction 58.7 degrees below south

at the end of the 5.5-s interval, the hawk misses the finch and has to "put on the brakes". he does so by controlling the contact forces on him by the air so as to produce an acceleration of 2.406m/s2 in a direction 74.824degrees above horizontally northward for a time of 1.1 seconds.

part d) what is the hawk's final velocity at the end of the 1.1-s interval?

magnitude 2.19 m/s direction 39 degrees below south

part e) once again, assume that the hawk's acceleration during the 1.1-s interval is constant. what is the hawk's displacement during the 1.1-s interval?

part f) you have now been tracking the hawk's motion for a total of 1.050 + 5.5 + 1.1 = 7.65 seconds. what is the total southward displacement of the hawk during those 7.65 seconds? specify the direction with a plus or minus sign assuming that southward is positive and northward is negative.

part g) finally, what is the final altitude of the hawk at the end of those 7.65 seconds?

At a certain instant after jumping from the airplane a, a skydiver b is in the position shown and has reached a terminal (constant) speed vb = 52 m/s. the airplane has the same constant speed va = 52 m/s, and after a period of level flight is just beginning to follow the circular path shown of radius ρa = 2330 m. (a) determine the velocity and acceleration of the airplane relative to the skydiver. (b) determine the time rate of change of the speed vr of the airplane and the radius of curvature ρr of its path, both as observed by the nonrotating skydiver.
