Which cultural element does a raised fist embody?

The raised fist is a political symbol used by Marxists, anarchists, socialists, communists, pacifists, trade union activists and within black nationalism. The fist is usually regarded as an expression of solidarity and strength.

The raised fist was used as a logo by the Industrial Workers of the World in 1917. The graphic symbol was popularized in 1948 by the Taller de Grafica Popular, a printing press in Mexico that used art to promote revolutionary social affairs.

The symbol has been used by various groups fighting against oppression. A very well-known use of a fist was the medal winners Tommie Smith and John Carlos, as they stood on the victory podium in athletics during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. This was at the height of the civil rights movement in the United States, and the two African-American sportsmen marked their support for this by tying their fist during the play of the US national anthem.

The symbol has also been used in a number of uprisings during the Arab Spring.
