When two or more sources of radiation have a fixed phase relationship they can create a fixed interference pattern. A classic example is when a single source of radiation strikes an opaque screen that contains two small slits that are equidistant from the source. Each slit then acts as a source of radiation. These slit sources are in phase they are derived from the same source and the travel time from that source to each slit is the same. On a distant observation screen, the interference pattern can be described in terms of the angle referenced to the perpendicular line passing directly between the two slits to the observation screen. When the angle is zero degrees (i. e., along the reference line) the intensity observed on the screen is known as the zero order maximum. The location of the maxima is given by, mλ = d sin θ, where m is the order number of the maximum, λ is the wavelength of the radiation, d is the distance between slits, and θ is the angle with respect to the reference line. The following questions are for a double slit setup, as described above, in which λ= 500nm and d=5000nm. At what angle do you find the 2nd minimum? 1. 20.49 degrees 2. 2.87 degrees 3. 14.48 degrees 4. 26.74 degrees 5. 8.63 degreesIf the observation screen is a distance of 5m from the slits, how far apart are the zero order maximum and the third order maximum? 1. 1.47 m 2. 1.37 m 3. 1.77 m 4. 1.67 m 5. 1.57 mImagine you insert a modulator in one of the slits that can change the phase of the radiation in that slit. If it changes the phase randomly and rapidly (much faster than your eye can observe changes) what sort of intensity pattern would you expect to observe?1. The maxima would appear to blink on and off. 2. The pattern of maxima and minima would be unchanged. 3. There would be constant or uniform intensity on the screen; no pattern of maxima and minima. 4. The pattern of maxima and minima would appear and then disappear over and over again. 5. There would be no light on the screen. 6. The pattern of maxima and minima would slowly slide back and forth.
