Joseph Lister was an English surgeon who pioneered the idea of sterile surgery. He was inspired by the work of Louis Pasteur, a French chemist and microbiologist who helped to prove that many diseases are caused by bacterial cells infecting the human body. Lister applied this knowledge to the practice of surgery by developing many processes and procedures for keeping surgical tools and bodily wounds free of microscopic infectious agents.
