Types of Forces Lab Report
Instructions: In the Types of Forces lab, you will experiment with the contact force friction. Use the following lab report to record your hypothesis, materials, procedures, observations, and conclusion. You will submit your completed report.
Name and Title
Name of Lab:
Student Name:
Instructor:
Date:
Objective
The purpose is to test whether the surface texture of the ground affects the distance an object can roll.
Hypothesis
If an object rolls over (type of material), then it will (describe the prediction of distance it will travel).
Materials
For this lab, I used the following items:
Procedure
Short summary of what I did:
I experienced the following errors while doing my experiment:
Test (independent) variable (What was different about my test groups?):
Outcome (dependent) variable (What was I measuring?):
Data
Record the distance traveled for each of the trials for both floor surfaces in the table below.
Distance Object Traveled
Floor Surface Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3
Data Analysis
Calculate the average distance traveled for each floor surface. Use the following guidelines for calculating averages, and show your work.
Floor Covering Calculation of the Average Average Distance Traveled
Example (trial 1 measurement + trial 2 measurement + trial 3 measurement) / 3 (number of trials) Your answer from the calculation, showing the average distance the ball rolled for that floor covering.
Conclusion
Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
Describe in your own words what friction is.
Describe how friction affected the results of your investigation.
Does an object travel farther on a smooth or slippery surface or on a rough surface? Why?
Propose another experiment that could be used to demonstrate that friction is a contact force.

Jason and mia are both running in a race. as they approach the finish line, you being the physicist that you are decide to time how long it takes them to reach the end of the race. when you start your stop watch (you can take this as time t = 0 s) you notice that mia is an unknown distance d ahead of jason and both are moving with the same initial velocity v_0. you also notice that jason is accelerating at a constant rate of a_j, while mia is deaccelerating at a constant rate of -a_m. jason and mia meet each other for the first time at time t = t_1. at this time (t = t_1) jason's velocity is two times that of mia's velocity, meaning v_j (t_1) = 2v_m (t_1). a) draw the position vs. time graph describing mia's and jason's motion from time t = 0 to time t = t_1. clearly label your axes and initial conditions on your graph. b) draw the velocity vs. time graph describing mia and jason's motion from time t = 0s to time t = t_1. clearly label your axes and initial conditions on your graph. c) how long from when the stop watch was started at t = 0s did it take mia and jason to meet? express your answer in terms of know quantities v_0, a_m, and a_j. d) when the stop watch started at time t = 0s, how far apart, d, were mia and jason? express your answer in terms of know quantities v_0, a_m, and a_j.

Light from the sun reaches the earth in 8.3 minutes. the velocity is 3.00 x 10^8 m/s. how far is earth from the sun? i know how to get to d = (3 x 10^8 m/s)(498 sec). i just don't know how to get from there to the answer being 1.5 x 10^11 m.
