Sound is all around us. Everything we hear in our day-to-day lives has a distinctive sound, from the jingling of keys to the tapping of a pencil on a desk. Sound is created when objects vibrate. These vibrations cause the air around them to vibrate, sending sound waves in various directions. Some objects tend to vibrate at a specific rate. This is known as their resonant frequency. Your class has been assigned to build musical instruments to investigate the relationship between pitch and resonance. You and your lab partner build a guitar using different sized rubber bands and a shoe box.

Which statements accurately describe the conclusions you make? Choose ALL that apply.

A) Thicker rubber bands produce a lower pitched sound.
B) Loosely stretched rubber bands produce a higher pitched sound.
C) Tightly stretched rubber bands produce a lower pitched sound.
D) Thinner rubber bands will produce a higher pitched sound.
E) Tightly stretched rubber bands produce a higher pitched sound.
