Sedimentary rocks are formed when rocks undergo the process of weathering(breaking down) and the rock particles or sediments are transported by either water, air to particular area where they are deposited layers by layers in order form a sedimentary rock.

Sediments undergo the processes of Transportation, Deposition,Compaction and Cementation in order to form Sedimentary rocks.

a. Transportation: This is the process after weathering of the rocks, whereby the rock particles are transported or moved by either water, air or wind, ice to other places.

b. Deposition: This is the process whereby the transported sediments are laid down in the form of layers on land.

c. Compaction can be defined as the process in sedimentary rock formation where the sediments are compacted or squeezed together leading to a reduction in the pore spaces between the sediments due to the pressure accumulated by the weight of the layers and layers of sediments.

d. Cementation is a process in Sedimentary rock formation where the are attached together by the minerals contained in the water found in the pore spaces located in the sediments.
