Place 4 cubes of ice onto each of two identical plates. Cover one plate of ice with a light (preferably white) cloth and the other with a dark (preferably black) cloth. Place both plates outside in the sun. Monitor the rate at which the ice cubes melt beneath the two different cloths. Explain your observations. Benjamin Franklin did a similar experiment nearly two centuries ago by laying samples of light and dark cloth on snow.
