Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Intermittent Endurance
Cardiorespiratory Fitness
The cardiovascular and respiratory systems transport oxygen into the body and allow it to circulate throughout. These systems also work to bring carbon dioxide out of the body. When a person exercises, the heart rate increases, which leads to an increased rate of oxygen flow from the blood to the working muscles, as well as increased rate of carbon dioxide going from muscles to lungs. The better the heart pumps blood to the body, the better cardiovascular fitness is. One can improve cardiovascular fitness by improving endurance, which has to do with how long a person can sustain a physical act.

The Yo-Yo Intermittent Endurance Tests
The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test and Yo-Yo Intermittent Endurance Test can test and improve one’s cardiorespiratory fitness. The recovery and endurance tests cover 25 meters and 22.5 meters of floor space, respectively. For these tasks, two cones are set 20 meters apart. For the endurance test, another cone is placed 2.5 meters away from the last one. A runner begins running from the middle cone at the first automated beep and aims to reach the cone 20 meters away by the next beep. Then, the runner turns and runs back to the middle cone, trying to get back by the next beep. In the next five seconds, the runner walks or jogs to the cone 2.5 meters away and back to the middle cone.

For the recovery test, the cones are spaced 20 and 5 meters apart instead of 20 and 2.5 meters apart. The recovery test is also 10 seconds instead of five seconds for the endurance test. The second time the runner does not make it back to the middle cone by the third beep, the runner does a final round and is then “out.” As the test progresses, the recorder announces faster speeds at which the runner must run to make time.

According to the article, how does the intermittent recovery test differ from the intermittent endurance test?
