A mechanical wave is a wave that is an oscillation of matter, and therefore transfers energy through a medium. While waves can move over long distances, the movement of the medium of transmission—the material—is limited. Therefore, the oscillating material does not move far from its initial equilibrium position.

Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. Their vibrations, or oscillations , are changes in electrical and magnetic fields at right angles to the direction of wave travel. All electromagnetic waves: transfer energy as radiation from the source of the waves to an absorber. can travel through a vacuum such as in space.  

The similarities between the mechanical and the electromagnetic waves are as follows-

Both these waves are responsible for carrying energy from one place to another in a particular direction in the form of waves.

These waves are characterized by a distinct crest as well as a trough.

They are comprised of a definite wavelength (λ), frequency (f) and amplitude (A).

Both the type of waves can propagate through a medium.
