The skier accelerates at 1 m/s, then, the acceleration is:

$a=1\frac{m}{s^2}$

to find the speed after 5 seconds you use the following formula:

$a=\frac{v-v_o}{t}$

but vo = 0m/s because the skier is at rest at the beginning.

You do v the subject of the formula:

$v=at=(1\frac{m}{s^2})(5s)=5\frac{m}{s}$

hence, the velocity is 5m/s
