A mountain generally,due to some conditions has two opposing sides; windward side and leeward side. A windward side is the side where wind blows to from below and has most precipitation. Thus the land at the windward side experiences much rain fall. The leeward side is the other side of the mountain with warm and dry air. It has low precipitation, thus the land on that side experiences little or no rain thereby turning into a desert.

The sky at the windward side of a mountain is often cloudy, while that at the leeward side is often clear.
