At the equator, the earth's field is essentially horizontal; near the north pole, it is nearly vertical. In between, the angle varies. As you move farther north, the dip angle, the angle of the earth's field below horizontal, steadily increases. Green turtles seem to use this dip angle to determine their latitude. Suppose you are a researcher wanting to test this idea. You have gathered green turtle hatchlings from a beach where the magnetic field strength is 50 mu T and the dip angle is 56 degree. You then put the turtles in a 2.0 m diameter circular tank and monitor the direction in which they swim as you vary the magnetic field in the tank. You change the field by passing a current through a 50-tum horizontal coil wrapped around the tank. This creates a field that adds to that of the earth. In what direction should current pass through the coil, to produce a net field in the center of the tank that has a dip angle of 62 degree ? What current should you pass through the coil, to produce a net field in the center of the tank that has a dip angle of 62 degree ? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Air is held within a frictionless piston-cylinder container, which is oriented vertically. the mass of the piston is 0.45 kg and the cross-sectional area is 0.0030 m2. initially (state 1) the pressure of the gas is sufficient to support the weight of the piston as well as the force exerted by the atmospheric pressure ( 101.32 kpa). the volume occupied by the air within the cylinder in state 1 is 1.00 liter. one end of a spring (with spring constant k = 1000 n/m) is attached to the top of the piston, while the other end of the spring is attached to a stage that can move vertically. initially the spring is undeflected and therefore exerts no force. then the stage is then moved quasistatically downward a distance of 10.0 cm, at which point the system reaches state 2. the piston-cylinder is not insulated; rather it remains in diathermal contact with the surroundings, which are at a constant temperature of 300 k. what is the change of pressure within the container?

An object with initial temperature 130 ∘ f is submerged in large tank of water whose temperature is 50 ∘ f . find a formula for f ( t ) , the temperature of the object after t minutes, if the cooling constant is k = βˆ’ 0.2 . remember newton's law of cooling (the rate of change of temperature with respect to time is equal to k times the difference between the temperature of the object and the surrounding temperature) ! : )
