A spanner is basically a wrench, you would also want to use a long handled wrench in order to have more mechanical advantage and be able to apply more torque. This can be proven as well using a simple physics formula:

where the variables are:

t = torque

f = applied force

d = perpendicular distance from fulcrum to where the force is applied

It is clear that keeping the applied force constant, if you enlarge the perpendicular distance, d, you will be able to apply more torque and therefore have an easier time releasing this nut.
