The movement of molecules in a matter is random. Molecules vibrate, and collide with neighboring molecules. According to the gas laws, this collisions are perfectly elastic, and do not lead to energy or momentum loss. The kinetic energy of motion of the molecules is dependent on the temperature of the matter, and molecules of hotter matters vibrates faster than that of a colder matter.

In the different states of matter, the motion of the molecules varies. Solid molecules move the least because of the stronger bond relative to the kinetic energy of the molecule. This is why solid matters can keep their shapes, and are not easily compressed. Liquids molecules move more that solid molecules, but are still relatively close together. Bonds in liquid molecules are less strong than that of solid molecules, and hence they do not have a definite shape but take the shape of their container. Gas molecules travel at great speed, and move very much far from each other. The bond strength between gas molecules are negligible, and they are highly compressible.
