A train on a straight track goes in the positive direction for 5.9km and then back up for3.8km. What is the train's displacement, what is the total distance covered by the train?

Trains displacement = 2.1 KM

Total distance covered by the train = 9.7 KM

Total distance covered by train will be the total distance moved train

hence

total distance covered by the train = distance covered by train in positive direction + distance covered by train in moving back

total distance covered by the train = 5.9 KM + 3.8 KM = 9.7 KM

Displacement is the shortest distance from original position to the final position during the course of movement of any object.

Given that

Train moved 5.9 KM in positive direction(let it be AB as shown)

hence displace until now is 5.9 KM

but it again moved back for 3.8 KM(let it be B to C as shown below)

it means , train moved 3.8 KM towards origin position

so net displacement will be = 5.9 KM - 3.8 KM = 2.1 KM

AB > 5.9 KM

ACB

3.8 KM

Thus, AC will be displacement = AB - BC = 5.9 KM - 3.8 KM = 2.1 KM
