PROJECT: NOW, THAT’S SAYING SOMETHING! Consider the work of Nobel laureate Karl von Frisch. A professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Munich (Germany), von Frisch noticed that whenever a worker honeybee returned to the colony loaded down with pollen or nectar, she would immediately begin dancing. This led von Frisch and colleagues at research centers in Austria and Great Britain to ask the question, “What is the significance of the various dances the returning honeybee performs?” From that question, they developed specific testable questions that led to an answer. Assignment Directions: For this project, you will investigate the work of Professor von Frisch and use various resources to explain the following issues in a multimedia presentation: How von Frisch designed his research into honeybee dances. A description of the researcher’s testable questions in your own words. What data he collected and how it supported or refuted his hypotheses. Why honeybees dance when they return to their colonies. (optionally) Why this research may be important today. Here are some key terms that may be helpful in your initial search: honeybee dance waggle dance honeybee dance language Karl von Frisch Adrian M. Wenner Assignment Guidelines: Begin this project by identifying and collecting information from a minimum of five reputable, balanced sources on the web that discuss the topic “honeybee dance” and von Frisch’s research. These sites should include a university, zoo or zoology research center, or recognized and well-respected publication. As you research this topic, ask and answer the four steps for testable questions to identify how honeybee researchers formulated their research questions, how they made their observations, and how their questions tested their hypotheses. Develop a five to ten-minute oral presentation accompanied by images, tables, graphs, or simulations that illustrate the key elements of your presentation. If possible, and with the permission and guidance of your instructor and parents, arrange to conduct a telephone or online interview with a zoologist who is familiar with Professor von Frisch’s work. Develop a series of 10 to 20 questions you might ask the expert about the investigation of honeybee dances, focusing on the main topics in this lesson—the four steps to develop a testable question. Make sure that you are well-prepared to speak with these researchers before you begin your conversation and that you thank the researcher(s) at the conclusion of the interview for their time and assistance. Using the answers from your interview, explain in a sentence or two how the original researchers answered the question “Why do honeybees dance when they return to the hive?” If your interview subject offered information about the current uncertain state of honeybees, you may include that in your report as well. As you prepare your presentation, make sure you leave time for your audience to ask questions. Try to anticipate what the members of your audience will want to know about this research. Make a list of these possible questions and come up with succinct and accurate responses. Submission Requirements: You will produce an annotated bibliography that not only identifies the websites, journals, magazines, and any video programming you used in your research, but also includes the names of the researchers, writers, and illustrators that compiled the information you used in those resources. For the rest of the project, you should develop a portfolio that includes: A complete outline of your presentation. Copies of the images, tables, graphs, and illustrations you used. Notes from any interviews you conducted including researchers’ responses. The possible audience questions for which you prepared answers in advance. A disk or flash drive containing the PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation material. Submit each portion of your presentation which includes your annotated bibliography, a complete outline of your presentation, images, tables, graphs, illustrations, notes from any interviews you conducted including researchers’ responses, and a list of the possible audience questions for which you prepared answers in advance. Submit your completed presentation as well.
