One race car has a higher acceleration than a second race car. But the second race car can reach a higher top speed than the first. How is this possible?

This can happen because speed has nothing to do with something’s top speed. Acceleration is how quickly something can reach its top speed. The top speed of something is not determined by the rate it accelerates.
