A Ballistic pendulum is pictured in Figure 1 below. It consists of two parts - a gun, which fires a small ball, and a pendulum. When the ball can be fired to land on the floor as in Figure 2, or to collide with the pendulum as in Figure 3 (a) and (b). For the following questions, report all responses in SI units and assume g = 9.8 m/s^2. 1. If a ball of mass m = 0.010 kg is fired from a height y = 1.0 m, as shown in Figure 2, what is the time, t, that it will take to fall to the ground?

2. If the ball travels a horizontal distance x = 2.5 m before hitting the ground, as shown in Figure 2, what was the initial velocity with which the ball was fired from the gun?

3. When the ball leaves the gun, what types of energy does it have relative to the floor? Calculate and enter each of them below. Enter zero if the ball did not have that type of energy

Kinetic Energy:
Potential Energy:
Mechanical Energy

4. What is the total energy of the ball when it hits the floor? Use the previous results to calculate this energy.

5.Use the total energy to calculate the speed that the ball hits the floor with.

6. The speed you calculated above is greater than the horizontal speed that you measured in this experiment. Which of the following statements explains why? Select all that apply.
Group of answer choices

a. The initial velocity only had a horizontal component, while the final velocity adds a vertical component to this constant horizontal component.

b. Acceleration due to gravity sped up the ball.

c. The ball's initial potential energy was converted into additional kinetic energy.
