An engine block surface that mates to a cylinder head has a flatness tolerance of 0.003 inch. Upon inspection with a precision straight edge, it is found that feeler gauge leaf 0.002 inch fits between the straight edge and the surface of the block in several locations, but the gap it too tight for the 0.003 inch leaf. However, in the vicinity of cylinder 3, the feeler gauge leaf 0.004 inch fits between the block and the straight edge. This is the only location where this large a gap is found. What is your engineering recommendation?A. Discard the entire engine, as its block is out of tolerance. B. Continue to use the block as is with no repairs. C. Have a machinist mill the surface of the block, taking off just enough material so that the flatness will be uniformly within 0.001 to 0.002 inch across the entire surface. Compensate for the reduction in combustion chamber volume with a thicker gasket. D. Discard the block because it is out of tolerance. Replace it with a new engine block.
