Below are data from a series of trials balancing an object that is hung from
one end of a meter stick by moving the
pivot point and letting the torque due to
the force of gravity on the meter stick
hold the system in equilibrium. The
location of the pivot point is measured
from the center of mass of the meter
stick. The meter stick used has a mass
of 125 g and is perfectly uniform, with its
center at the 50.0 cm mark.
1 meter
The mass of the object, measured by a
digital scale, is 217 g. Over the next few
questions, we are going to determine if
the average mass of the object, based
on the experimental trials, is in
agreement with the mass as measured
with a digital scale.
Remember that "agreement" in this case
refers to the measured value being
within a range of +2A, where Az is the
standard uncertainty, of the calculated
mean.
