According to the plumb pudding model of the atom, positive charges are spread out (diffuse) and surround the negative electrons like jello around some fruit. In
our last class we replicated Rutherford's gold foil experiment and learned that
alpha particles can only be deflected by a STRONG electric field, which occurs if
positive charges are very concentrated (packed together).
