Students in a middle school science class are working in pairs to experiment with pendulums. Their teacher, Ms. Oreski, has asked them to answer this question: What one or more things determine how fast a pendulum swings? She also suggests three factors they might study in their experimentation: a pendulum's weight, its length, and the force with which it has been pushed. Each pair has 2 feet of string and various objects that can be tied to the bottom of the string. Each pair also has a few sheets of paper on which to record various hypotheses and observations. Does this task impose a reasonable cognitive load?

Unpolarized light of intensity i_0=750w/m^2 is incident upon two polarizers. after passing through both polarizers the intensity is i_2=280w/m^2. (a) what is the intensity of the light after it passes through the first polarizer in w/m^2? (b) write an equation for the angle between the polarizers in terms of the initial (i_0) and final (i_2) intensities. (c) find the angle between the polarizers in degrees.
