Given the following information: Red giants derive their energy not from nuclear fusion of hydrogen, but by fusion of helium. Specifically, a reaction where 3 helium nuclei fuse into 1 carbon nucleus.

The mass of a helium nucleus is 6.645x10-27 kg, and the mass of a carbon nucleus is 1.9922x10-26 kg
The mass-energy relation is famously: E = mc2

1) This is the mass that is converted into energy, and we can figure out how much energy that is by using Einstein's famous equation:

E = mc2
c = 3 x 108 m/s
Plug the mass difference (∆m) into the equation above, and find the energy released in units of Joules (1 J = 1 kg*m2/s2).
