Does the width of a member impact failure load

Impact loading on concrete gives rise to a strain rate influence on strength, stiffness, ductility and failure mode. Moreover, inertia is activated, which influences the resistance and failure mode of concrete structures. In most macroscopic models currently used in engineering applications, the influence of inertia forces on dynamic strength enhancement is still part of the constitutive law, instead of emerging automatically from dynamic analysis. Detailed numerical analysis based on the microplane model shows that the progressive increase of apparent tensile strength can be attributed to structural inertia invoked by the softening of concrete, and not to material strength.
