What happens when a continental plate splits apart

When plates pull apart underwater, the hot magma instantly rises and spreads itself to form a new ocean floor.Under a continent, the crust splits open to allow magma out. The magma might make its way slowly to the surface, creating warm areas and hot springs or geysers as surface water meets it.Or the magma might explode, bringing into existence a new volcano where there was only cool earth before.
