Electromagnetic and mechanical waves both transfer energy. how is an electromagnetic wave different from a mechanical wave?
an electromagnetic wave has frequency, and a mechanical wave does not.
an electromagnetic wave is made of atoms, and a mechanical wave is not.
an electromagnetic wave can travel in a vacuum, and a mechanical wave cannot.
electromagnetic waves have frequencies that never change, and mechanical wave frequencies change.

If the temperature were raised very high, classically what would we expect the heat capacity per object to be for this one-dimensional system? give a numerical value. chigh t = __ j/k/object (one reason for the discrepancy is that the high-temperature limit assumes that the number of oscillators is large (n > > 1), which is not the case in this tiny system.)

Two manned satellites approaching one another at a relative speed of 0.550 m/s intend to dock. the first has a mass of 2.50 β 103 kg, and the second a mass of 7.50 β 103 kg. assume that the positive direction is directed from the second satellite towards the first satellite. (a) calculate the final velocity after docking, in the frame of reference in which the first satellite was originally at rest.(b) what is the loss of kinetic energy in this inelastic collision? (c) repeat both parts, in the frame of reference in which the second satellite was originally at rest. final velocity(d) loss of kinetic energy = ?
