The world´s tallest elevator is actually underground, in the Mponeng Gold Mine in South Africa, reaching 2280 meters in height. Using the formula for gravitational potential energy (below), calculate how much extra gravitational potential energy the elevator will have at the top of the mine, after it collects 10 passengers from the bottom of the mine. The passengers have an average mass of 72 kg each and the lift itself has a mass of 450 kg. You can assume that gravity on earth is ~10 N/kg. *

Carbon is allowed to diffuse through a steel plate 15 mm thick. the concentrations of carbon at the two faces are 0.65 and 0.30 kg c/m^3 fe, which are maintained constant. if the preexponential and activation energy are 6.2 x 10-7 m2 /s and 80,000 j/mol, respectively, compute the temperature at which the diffusion flux is 1.43 x 10^-9 kg/m^2 -s.
