Sodium chloride is the primary salt dissolved in ocean water. For every liter, there are about 35 grams of salt dissolved in ocean water, which corresponds to a salt concentration of 0.6 moles/liter, since the molar mass of sodium chloride is about 58 grams. Since sodium chloride dissociates into one sodium ion and one chloride ion when dissolved, the solute concentration of ocean water is about 1.2 moles/liter. The physiological salt concentration of human cells, however, is around 0.15 moles/liter, which corresponds to a solute concentration of around 0.3 moles/liter (very similar to a potato!). After providing all that information, if you are stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of an ocean, should you drink ocean water and why or why not?

a. No you shoudn' pressure, and thus water is driven into the cells, causing them to rupture. t. Since the solute concentration of ocean water is much larger, it has a much larger osmotic.
b. No you shoudn't. Since the solute concentration of ocean water is much larger than that of human cells, there will be a net flow of water into the cells and out of the ocean water, thus expanding the cells until they rupture.
c. Water, water everywhere, go ahead and drink!
d. No you shoudn't. Since the solute concentration of ocean water is much larger than that of human cells, there will be a net osmotic flow of water out of the cells and into the water, thus dessicating the cells
