Helena is walking down the street with an open umbrella on a windy day and feels the umbrella being pulled out of her hands. There is, in fact, a force that is pulling up on the umbrella. She notices that the wind is blowing across the top of the umbrella but the air underneath the umbrella is trapped and is motionless. Use Bernoulli’s Equation to explain where this force comes from. Hint: Draw a picture of the umbrella showing the wind currents on top and below the umbrella.
