Part IV: Interference
Trial 1
1. With one person on each end, stretch the spring to about three meters.
2. The third member of the group should set a plastic cup at the center of the
slinky approximately 1 foot away from spring. (See diagram)
3 Each person at the end of the slinky will generate a
pulse on the same side of the slinky at the same time by quickly flicking
his/her wrist from side to side.
4 Does the wave hit the cup?
Trial 2
5. Repeat steps 1-2.
6. Each person at the end of the slinky will generate a pulse on the opposite sides of the slinky at the same
time by quickly flicking his/her wrist from side to side.
7. Does the wave hit the cup?
Observations:
Trial 1: What happened to the size of the wave when
the two pulses met?
Trial 2: What happened to the size of the wave when
the two pulses met?
1.
In Trial I of Part IV, what kind of interference is observed? How do you know?
