Julie and her friend are wandering around their neighborhood talking. they walk three blocks east, then two blocks south, one block west, and finally two blocks north. julie and her friend have traveled a distance of eight blocks and have a displacement of blocks east.

Displacement is the change in position of an object/person and the distance between the initial point and the final point. The path that the person/object takes to get to that final point does not matter!

The easiest way to picture their walk is drawing it out (see image). You can see that they start at the blue dot and end at the green dot. The distance between the blue and green dot is 2 blocks.
