In the United States, cohabitation rates have been rapidly rising in recent decades. Research indicates that couples (among all age groups) are increasingly showing a preference for cohabitation rather than marriage. Cohabitation has become more common recently because of several reasons including: weaker religious beliefs- where couples are more likely to be intimately involved and have children when they are unmarried; to avoid the economic, emotional and social consequences of divorce, avoiding the "ultimate" commitment of marriage, etc.

The main reason that marriage rates in the United States and other countries is declining is because divorce rates are rising- over 50% of marriages end in divorce.
