Asmall group of centrists tried to get the jacobins and the conservatives to compromise on what main idea?

The answer is a republic as opposed to constitutional monarchy. Initially they opted for constitutional monarchy but the king did not accept the limitations of his position.  Later foreign troops were on their way and this resulted in the failure of this system of government.  It later paved the way for a republic.
