Trait Anxiety

Anxiety is a state of inner uneasiness that is characterized by some physical effects, such as rapid breathing, increased heart rate and sweating.

Anxiety is normally divided in two categories: trait anxiety and state anxiety.

These two types are distinguished by the duration, intensity and frequency of the symptoms. State anxiety arises under a specific threat. When the threat goes away, the person stops experiencing the symptoms. Therefore, it is a temporary disorder.

On the other hand, trait anxiety is characterized by long duration and intensity of events, and by the wide range of situations that can trigger it. Therefore, trait anxiety is considered a personality trait and not a temporary disorder.
