Liliuokalani inherited her throne after her brother Kalākaua in 1891 and shortly after she sought to introduce a new constitution that would give her and the Hawaiian indigenous people greater power and influence. In order to secure US influence and prevent the introduction of trade barriers, the USS Boston cruiser was ordered to land troops under pretense to protect government buildings and the royal residence. The queen was deposed in 1893 and the republic was introduced in 1894.
